How to Apply to KIPP Nashville

The enrollment journey can be broken into five main stages.

    Start Your Application
  • Submit Your Application

Start by completing an online application for the KIPP Nashville school you would like your student to attend. The application only takes a few minutes to complete.

After submitting your application, check your email for confirmation and next steps. If you don’t receive a confirmation, verify that the application was successfully submitted or contact the enrollment team for assistance.

  • Receive Your Lottery Results

When applications exceed available seats, KIPP Nashville uses a random lottery selection process.

Families receive notification indicating whether their student has been offered a seat or placed on the waitlist. Results can be viewed through the Smart Choice portal, and schools also contact families about their enrollment status.

  • Accept Your Student's Seat

If your student receives an offer, the next step is to accept the seat through Smart Choice.
Make sure you complete this step within the required timeframe so you can continue to registration.

  • Complete Registration

After accepting your student’s seat, you’ll complete registration and provide the required documentation.

Families registering students in grades K–12 should be prepared to provide documents that may include:

    • Completed student registration packet
    • Record of birth, such as a birth certificate or passport
    • Immunization record on a Tennessee Certificate of Immunization
    • Parent or guardian photo ID
    • Proof of residency
    • Recent transcript or report card, if available
    • School physical for students who are new to Davidson County

If the address on the parent or guardian’s ID does not match the student’s residence, two forms of proof of residency should be provided. Families without proof of address in their name or legal guardianship documentation should contact the KIPP Nashville Enrollment Team for assistance.

  • Attend Orientation

Once enrollment and registration are complete, it’s time to prepare for the school year.

Each KIPP Nashville school holds an orientation during the summer and shares important information families need before the first day.

Applying for Kindergarten

Families applying for a student entering kindergarten should plan for a few additional steps.

A student must generally be 5 years old on or before August 15 to enter kindergarten. For students who turn 5 between August 16 and September 30, a parent or guardian may request that the school administer a Brigance K-Readiness Assessment.

Students entering kindergarten or students who are new to Metro Nashville Public Schools also need a nine-digit MNPS student ID number beginning with 190. Families can obtain this number through an MNPS enrollment center by providing the required documentation.

Already Attend a KIPP Nashville School?

Current KIPP Nashville students do not need to submit a new application simply to return to the same school.

However, students do need to apply when switching KIPP Nashville schools, including transitions from elementary to middle school or from middle to high school.

If your student is approaching one of these transitions, explore the schools serving their next grade level and review the application process early.

What Happens if My Student Is Waitlisted?

Being placed on a waitlist doesn’t necessarily mean your student won’t have an opportunity to enroll.

Applications submitted after the application deadline are automatically added to the waiting list. KIPP Nashville recommends that families remain on the waitlist because schools may continue offering available seats throughout the summer and into the first few weeks of the school year.

Keep your contact information current and watch for communication from KIPP Nashville so you don’t miss an enrollment update.

Before- and Aftercare

KIPP Nashville elementary and middle schools offer before- and aftercare through external providers.

Those providers coordinate registration and program logistics. Families receive information about available programs and how to register during orientation before the beginning of the school year.

If before- or aftercare is an important part of your family’s school decision, ask about the current provider and program details when you tour your school.

Transportation

Transportation is an important part of choosing a school.

KIPP Nashville provides transportation at all campuses for students who live within designated KIPP transportation zones. Because eligibility depends on your student’s school and home location, families should contact the individual school for current transportation information.

Tour Before You Enroll

You don’t have to choose a school based on a website alone.

KIPP Nashville offers campus tours so families can experience schools firsthand and talk with enrollment representatives. Tours are available for KIPP Nashville campuses across East, North, and South Nashville.

Schedule a Tour

During your visit, consider asking:

  • What does a typical school day look like?
  • What are the academic expectations for my student’s grade?
  • How does the school support different learners?
  • What arts, athletics, clubs, and enrichment opportunities are available?
  • How does the school communicate with families?
  • Is transportation available from my area?
  • Is before- or aftercare available?
  • What should my family know about enrollment?
  • What options will my student have at the next grade level?

Whenever possible, bring your student so they can experience the campus and ask their own questions.

Why Families Choose KIPP Nashville

Choosing KIPP Nashville means joining a network serving students throughout the K–12 journey.

Across its schools, KIPP Nashville combines academics with opportunities for arts, physical education, music, sports, enrichment, and extracurricular involvement. As students reach high school, they also receive individualized college and career support through KIPP Forward.

KIPP Forward helps students explore the paths available after graduation and continues supporting alumni as they navigate college, career, and other postsecondary opportunities.

The goal is not to determine one future for every student. It’s to help students build the skills and confidence to pursue the future they choose.
