Introducing Our Newest Principal - KIPP Nashville

Introducing Our Newest Principal

We are so excited to welcome Merisa Marsh as the founding Principal of KIPP Antioch Global Middle School! During the 2023-2024 school year, Ms. Marsh served as a Principal in Residence at KIPP Nashville and spent time getting to know the students and families in our schools.

KIPP Antioch Global Middle School will open in August 2024 with founding fifth and sixth graders. The school will be located in our new building inside the former Macy’s at the Global Mall in Antioch.

Please get to know our newest principal!

Question: Where are you from?

Answer: I’m a child of America. I don’t have a hometown! I was born in Atlanta and have lived outside of Memphis, in New Jersey, North Carolina, Texas, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, and now I’m excited to be back in Tennessee.

Q: What is your favorite movie?

A: My favorite movie is anything legal. I have a law degree, and the reason I went to law school is because of Matthew McConaughey and his series of legal movies, so Amistad, A Time to Kill and The Lincoln Lawyer. I actually met him while he was filming a movie in Louisiana, and he bought us beignets.

Q: How long have you worked in education?

A: This is my fourteenth year as an educator! I have done everything from teach Special Education, to being a principal and Chief Academic Officer. I missed kids and wanted to be back in the principal seat, so I’m ready to do this work.

Q: How did you get into education?

A: I come from a family of educators, literally everyone is an educator. My grandpa was a principal when he was 22 and that’s how he met my grandma, she was one of his teachers.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: I love to read and try to read as many books as possible. My goal this year is to read 100 books. I’m 40 books in, so slightly ahead! I will read anything you give me, the genre doesn’t matter as long as it’s good and interesting. Every summer I pick a topic to read about. So last summer, it was all the Black Panther Party. I have two daughters, a 17-month old and a 16-year old. And, my husband teaches math and science at KIPP Antioch College Prep Elementary School. So, we’re a KIPP family through and through!

Q: What are you most excited about when it comes to opening this new school?

A: Just seeing the excitement that the kids have, the passion the families have and how they from the beginning are showing up for their kids. I can’t wait to do that partnership with them and provide the highest quality holistic education for the kids

Q: What do you think makes KIPP Antioch Global Middle School special?

A: We are going to be the best, but we are also going to be part of the community. Whether those are members of our school or folks who don’t attend, we want to be known as a community school that celebrates and learns the history of Antioch to make sure we are authentically taking up space there.kipp

Q: If you had to name the one thing KIPP Antioch Global Middle School strives for, what would that be?

A: Our pillars are a focus on literacy, so we’re taking over Antioch one reader at a time! We want to work on experiential learning, too. Covid opened the world in a way, so you can go anywhere and do anything. Our motto so to speak is “Oh the places you’ll go,” a Dr. Seuss book. That’s our guiding light. We also want to create a college going identity in our students, because whether children choose to go to college or not, I don’t ever want that to be something that could not be the choice for them. If you want to go to college, we’re providing that education so you have the opportunity to go.
